Youth FIRST Athletics · Team Chat: Athletes Only Channel Guardian Consent
Effective date: September 27, 2026
This page explains the permission a parent or guardian gives, in the app, for their athlete to post in the Athletes Only channel of the team chat.
How team chat is built
The chat is inside our team only: there is no messaging with anyone outside it, and there are no private or direct messages anywhere in the app. On the youth side it has these channels:
Team: the whole team, athletes with their own login, parents and Coach, and anyone on the team can post;
Athletes Only: where athletes 13 to 17 with their own login post, once a parent allows it;
Parents Only: parents and Coach; athletes never see it;
Feed: the team's activity feed, which posts itself and takes no messages.
Athletes under 13 have no login and cannot use chat at all.
What you are allowing
Every athlete on the team with their own login can read the Athletes Only channel, and so can every parent and Coach. Your permission lets your athlete post there. Until you allow it, the channel tells your athlete that their parent has not turned it on yet. That is the whole scope: the Team channel does not need this permission, and parents read and post there too.
How you allow it, and turn it off
At the top of the Athletes Only channel, your parent account shows a card for each of your athletes with their own login, with a button to allow Athletes Only chat or to turn it off. Allowing it asks you to confirm, each time, that your athlete may openly communicate with other athletes in that channel. Turning it off takes one tap, and turning it back on asks you to confirm again. Permission never switches itself back on.
Safeguards that are always on
Parents can read the Athletes Only channel at any time. It is athletes only for posting, never hidden from parents.
Coach moderates every channel and can remove any message.
A language filter stops a message with profanity before it posts, and Coach is alerted if one ever gets through.
No private messaging. There are no direct messages or private channels between Coach and an athlete, or between athletes, anywhere in the app. Youth accounts cannot delete their own messages, so what was said stays visible to parents and Coach.
What this permission does not cover
Discord is a separate platform, outside this app, with its own rules: 13 and up, and parent-visible by team policy. This permission does not touch Discord, and links to it show where they lead.
It changes no other setting: the feed, leaderboards, the photo and video release and notifications are each controlled separately.
